The Keys to Maintaining the Spirit of Faith

Dr. Patrick Nyaga

Faith in God involve 3 major things

  1. Speaking
  2. Believing
  3. Acting

Mark chapter 11:23-24 says; “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them”.

In this case saying and asking is an action that one takes. You and I are putting into action when we say or declare through prayer what we expect to come to pass.

In Psalms 116:10, psalmist demonstrated the spirit of faith to us when he wrote, “I believed, therefore I spoke…” (Later, the Apostle Paul recalled those words and wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:13, “Since we have the same spirit of faith…we also believe and therefore speak”.

If you were to ask many Christians what faith is, many would respond with answers like trust, confidence, or assurance. All of these are true, but according to the Bible, there is more to faith than just this. Based on what apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:13, anyone who has faith – whether it is you, me or anyone else – has the same spirit and it operates the same way for everyone regardless of age or how long you have been a believer. In fact, 1 Samuel 17 tells us that David had the spirit of faith when he was just a youth.

How to maintain the spirit of faith

A. Believe the Word: Believing the Word is a decision one makes to align with its truths, even when they don’t align with the circumstances one faces. This allows one’s faith to grow and empower them to take action. As a result one is able to tap into God’s strength and favor, renew their mind, and live a more joyful and successful life.

Benefits of Believing God’s Word

1. It inspires action: Believing the Word is not passive. It is an active decision that empowers you to take hold of blessings and fulfill your God-given destiny.

2. It changes your perspective: By focusing on God’s promises, you can begin to overcome negative circumstances and doubts by believing that what you believe is greater than your current situation.

3. It brings internal change: Believing in God’s Word is said to lead to joy and peace, as it counters doubt and renews the mind, which in turn changes your attitudes and behaviors.

4. It provides strength and guidance: The Word is a source of strength, guidance, and hope. When you believe it, you can find the power to handle any challenge and receive the guidance you need for your path.

5. It acts as a great connection to God: Believing God’s Word sets the foundation for a relationship with God. It is seen as the key to salvation and deliverance as well as the avenue to receiving His help in all areas of life.

The devil will attempt to draw you into his arena, so you focus on your circumstances, your past, your feelings, or failures. He wants to face you anywhere except in the arena of your faith. He’ll say to you, “It looks to me like things are getting worse instead of better. It looks like you are going to go under.” But when you have the spirit of faith, you don’t let him lure you out of the arena of faith. Instead of believing the devil’s lies, you simply say to him, “I walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

B. Act on the Word: It is very easy to see the contrast between those who have the spirit of faith and those who do not by reading Numbers 13 and 14. The people who carry the spirit of faith look at obstacles as temporal abstraction. There we see that Moses sent twelve spies – including Joshua and Caleb – into the Promised Land. For forty days those men traveled together and scouted the territory God promised them.

When they returned, they gave very different reports even though their physical eyes had seen exactly the same things. Caleb said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it”(Numbers 13:30), but ten of the spies banded together and said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we” (Numbers 13:31).

What was the difference? God said that Caleb had “a different spirit” (Numbers 14:24). That different spirit was the spirit of faith! Joshua also had the spirit of faith, and because of it, both he and Caleb were able to inherit the Promised Land. Those who did not have the spirit of faith were unable to enter in.

All twelve had observed the same things, but their perspectives were determined by what was inside them, not by what they saw. Likewise, you and I don’t see with our eyes, we see through them. Spiritually speaking, we “see” with our hearts, and anyone with the spirit of faith can “see” victory even before it is visible to others!

C. Speak / Declare the Word: Romans 10:6-12: (NKJV)
“But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him”.

It is very imperative to read these scriptures over ourselves and to speak them out over us when we are praying. We need faith to make God’s Word a reality in our lives. Romans 10:17 (ESV) says that “Faith comes by HEARING the Word of God”. Proverbs 18:21 (KJV) says that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” – in other words what we say will influence what we have in our lives.

Jesus, in Mark 11:22-23, says: “Have faith in God. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever SAYS to this mountain, “Be lifted up and thrown into the sea” and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him (according to God’s will)”. This means that we can speak to the illnesses, troubles and whatever mountains there are in our lives, and command them to go, as long as we are speaking according to God’s will and God’s Word.
Ladies and gentlemen “faith speaks only the outcome” Faith in spoken words focusses on the desired, positive result rather than on negative or doubtful circumstances.

By speaking words of faith, one is expressing belief in the desired outcome, such as overcoming obstacles, which can influence the actual result. True spirit of faith should be expressed through words that confirm what God has said and desired.

Key Notes to remember:
1. Speak what you expect to come to pass: The principle is to speak about the positive outcome you want, rather than the negative or feared outcome.
2. Be Optimistic: The language of faith is meant to be optimistic, using phrases like “we are well able” or “the Lord is with us”.
3. Act on what believe: Our words should be accompanied by actions that align with our faith, as the Bible teaches that faith is confirmed by works.
4. Avoid negative confession: The negative outcome is what happens when a person is speaking doubt and negativity, which limits what God can do
