How to Honor God through Stewardship

Dr. Patrick Nyaga

What Is stewardship?

  • Stewardship is the act of watching, overseeing, or managing something on the behalf of another
  • Stewardship entails the management of resources, including treasure, time, and talents, that are entrusted to a church and its leaders by God. This concept involves overseeing all God given resources in an organized and consistent manner. This includes financial assets as well as the time, skills, and abilities of individuals participating in the ministry.
  • Stewardship is a way to show gratitude by serving God and others with our gifts. This can also be referred to as honoring God

Honoring God through stewardship

Firstly, it is essential to acknowledge that all assets—including time, talents, and treasure—are entrusted as gifts to us by God and should be managed with responsibility and integrity.

Many believers and especially church leaders fail to acknowledge this fact and handle what God has given them irresponsibly and even brag about it. This is a direct failure as far as Stewardship in ministry is concerned.

Stewardship means acknowledging ownership and acting as a responsible caretaker, and using all resources entrusted to you by God appropriately and with integrity.

Stewardship And  Accountability

Accountability is emphasized in verses like Romans 14:12, stating that each person will be accountable to God for their actions. We shall talk about accountability further down.

Ladies and gentlemen, these passages underscore the importance of responsible management and faithful service in all aspects of life.

Scriptural references pertaining to stewardship:

Genesis 1:28:

God gives humanity dominion over creation, emphasizing stewardship over the earth and its resources.

Matthew 25:14-30 (Parable of the Talents):

This parable illustrates that believers are responsible for wisely using the gifts and resources entrusted to them.

Luke 12:48:

Jesus states that to whom much is given, much is required, highlighting the responsibility that comes with blessings.

1 Peter 4:10:

Believers are encouraged to use their spiritual gifts to serve others, demonstrating faithful stewardship of God’s grace.

1 Corinthians 4:2:

This verse emphasizes that stewards must be faithful in carrying out their responsibilities.

2 Corinthians 5:10:

Believers will appear before the judgment seat of Christ to receive recompense for their deeds.

Hebrews 13:17:

Christians are called to obey their leaders, who will give an account for their souls.

James 5:16:

Confess your sins to one another and pray for each other, indicating a need for accountability in the community of believers.

Ezekiel 33:8-9:

This passage highlights the accountability of watchmen (leaders) to warn the wicked of their ways, or else their blood will be required

Key aspects of stewardship in the ministry:

  1. Recognizing God’s Ownership:

The foundation of stewardship is acknowledging that God is the ultimate owner of all things, and we are merely managers of what He has entrusted to us.

  1. Time, Talents, and Treasures:

Stewardship encompasses how we utilize our time, the skills and abilities we possess, and the material possessions we have, according to Christian stewardship resources.

  1. Purposeful Living:

Stewardship involves making intentional decisions about how we use our resources, aligning our actions with God’s will and seeking to glorify Him in all that we do.

  1. Serving Others:

One way to honor God through stewardship is by using our gifts to serve others, whether through acts of kindness, providing financial support to ministries, or using our skills to meet the needs of our community.

  1. Accountability:

We will be held accountable for how we manage the resources entrusted to us.

Examples of Stewardship:

    • Giving: Proportionately giving back to God through tithes and offerings.
    • Serving: Volunteering time and talents in the church or community.
    • Creation Care: Being responsible stewards of the environment.
    • Financial Management: Using money wisely and avoiding debt.
    • Relationships: Building healthy relationships and using them to encourage others.
    • Sharing the Gospel: Using our words and actions to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

CONCLUSION:

Adopting a biblical view of stewardship helps individuals and ministries live purposefully and honor God in all areas.
