Understanding The Ministerial Gift of a Teacher

The spiritual gift of teaching is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:6–81 Corinthians 12:28Ephesians 4:1–12). It is a gift given by the Holy Spirit, enabling one to effectively communicate the truths of the Bible to others. It is most often, but not always, used in the context of the local church. The gift of teaching involves the analysis and proclamation of the Word of God, explaining the meaning, context, and application to the hearer’s life. The gifted teacher is one who has the unique ability to clearly instruct and communicate knowledge, specifically the doctrines of the faith and truths of the Bible

A teacher has a supernatural ability ONLY given by the Holy Spirit.  It is important to note that Just because one has knowledge does not mean they have been given the gift of teaching. Teachers take great pleasure and happiness in their calling.  They see their research and preparation for teaching as a divine mission and find joy in the work.

The Greek word for “teach” is didaskalos, which means “to instruct.” We see examples all through the Bible of teaching. Jesus Himself was the Great Teacher, and Jesus commanded His disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20). Jesus commanded His disciples to teach new disciples everything He had commanded, instructing them in both doctrine and holy living. Christ’s ministers are not to teach the commandments of men or anything that is of their own or other men’s devising, but only that which is ordered by Christ.

As with all spiritual gifts, the gift of teaching is meant to be used for the building up of the church and the glory of God. Those who possess this gift are called to use it with humility and a servant’s heart, seeking to help others grow in their faith and understanding of God’s word.

It’s also important to note that the gift of teaching is not limited to those who hold formal teaching positions within the church, but can be expressed in a variety of ways in the context of everyday life. Those who possess this gift may be called upon to share their knowledge and insights with others in a variety of settings, including work, family, and social situations.

Characteristics of a Teaching Gift

  1. Systematic and organized: Presents information in an orderly fashion, often with a clear progression from beginning to end, making complex topics easier to follow.
  2. Thorough and accurate: Involves extensive research and attention to detail to ensure teachings align with the true meaning of scripture.
  3. Clear communication: Explains biblical truths in a way that is understandable to people of various levels of understanding.
  4. Life transformation: Focuses on helping others apply scripture to their lives, leading to personal change and spiritual growth.
  5. Spiritually motivated: Driven by a desire to serve God and build up the body of Christ by equipping believers with the knowledge of His word.
  6. Elaborates of God’s Word: While prophecy is about proclaiming God’s word, teaching is about explaining the meaning of that word to others.
  7. Excellence in teaching: A person can be a great teacher through a motivational gift, such as service, even if they don’t have the spiritual gift of teaching, as all gifts are intended for the good of the body.
  8. In various settings: The gift of teaching is not limited to formal classrooms; it can be exercised in small groups, one-on-one discipleship, or online platforms.
  9. To fulfill the Great Commission: The gift helps fulfill Jesus’ command to “teach them to obey everything I have commanded you,” which is essential for discipleship and spiritual maturity
